Lyne F.C’s first competitive match for the newly formed men’s team.
Lyne F.C v Billy Jeffreys select XI
The day started with a potential major problem and that being that Pyrcroft Grange School had a fete taking place at the same time as the match and school could have easily asked us to postpone.
Massive thanks go out to the school for allowing us to play the match at the same time as the fete, and in actual fact added more touchline spectators to what was going to be a great day of football.
The day got even more interesting when we started to see some of Billy’s select XI turn up, I think it’s fair to say Billy had recruited from a somewhat higher levels than what we will be playing against in the coming season with his midfield in the past having no less than 20 League one appearances between them both and various other players that have played/play at conference, Rymans Prem and southern Prem to name but a few.
The Lyne squad comprised of the senior players within the men’s section and no less than three Under 18’s from last season’s Surrey youth League team in the starting line-up.
On paper this should have been a miss match, heavily in favour of our opponents, but after the first ten minutes we started to settle and keep the ball for reasonable periods of time, but as you can imagine the centre of the park was being bossed by our opponents.
I think a fair summing up of the first half would be that Billy’s team was in charge, but they only had a one goal advantage going into the second half which is great credit to the Lyne Team.
First half finished 1-0 to the Billy Jeffreys select XI
With a change of shape at half time going back to a more traditional 4-4-2, and a good few coaching points being given to the players the second half commenced.
From the whistle Lyne seemed to have a better shape to them and was pressing higher up the pitch bringing the now two front men more into the game and creating goal scoring opportunities which was rare in the first half.
Unfortunately we got undone by a more direct ball which left a one on one with our keeper and was put away very well by the Jeffrey’s striker.
Not long after going two down Lyne had their own one on one which there keeper initially saved but the rebound was followed up and slotted away to make the final score 2-1.
There were many positives for Lyne to take away from this match and as to be expected many things we need to work on the training ground. But a very worthwhile match which see in the end no less than five of last years under 18’s on the pitch for the final whistle!
A summing up of the match as a whole was competitive, good quality, good mannered and from the outside a pleasure to watch.
Our thanks go out to Billy Jeffreys and his team for being a pleasure to play against, Pyrcroft School for allowing us to get the game on, John Cane for refereeing and setting out pitch, Stuart Williams for preparing the playing surface for nearly an hour and half on the mower, Lee Wain and Ian Barado for preparing the players and coaching them brilliantly through the game, Richard Johnson the Lyne F.C physio and fitness guru for looking after the physical welfare of the players and Sue who washed the kit in readiness for our next match.
A great start to our pre-season and an enjoyable day of football for all involved with the day.
